The lifespan of nematodes depends on several factors, such as the species, soil conditions, and food availability. Generally, nematodes remain alive in the soil for several weeks to a few months .
If the nematodes can find sufficient prey (such as insect larvae), they can reproduce and maintain their population. Once the prey is cleared, most nematodes die within a few weeks, as they no longer have any food to feed on.
In addition, nematodes can enter a dormant phase under certain conditions (for example, cold or lack of food), during which they are less active. This is also why it's best to store nematodes in the refrigerator (and not the freezer). This helps them survive longer until conditions improve.
In general, the effectiveness of nematodes is highest shortly after application, and they remain active as long as they find sufficient food and environmental conditions remain favourable.
